On September 21, 2024, C-mine and B-Classic join forces for a brand new festival titled: The Sound of C. The title refers to the cult hit by Confetti's from the 80s, which achieved international success within the new beat music scene. It sounded different, it was bold, unconventional, new, and daring—these are the core themes for the new festival at C-mine!

The festival brings together (international) artists who explore the boundaries of genres, each with a nod to music, pop culture, and subculture. As an audience, be prepared to be surprised and led through the energy building. From circus artists to classical pianists, from pole dance acts to a Bulgarian choir—anything is possible.

LE MYSTÈRE DES VOIX BULGARES (BU)
This 18-member choir from Bulgaria has been around since 1952 and is coming to Genk for an a cappella concert. The choir has been picked up by artists worldwide and can be heard on a track by American rapper Drake. Additionally, artists like Kate Bush and Gorillaz have openly declared themselves fans! After performing at Ancienne Belgique, Primavera Sound Festival, and Roskilde, it’s now Genk’s turn!

COMPAGNIE BARKS / BASTIEN DAUSSE (FR)
Compagnie Barks is the contemporary circus company led by circus artist Bastien Dausse. The company was born out of a desire to play with gravity. They have performed all over Europe, including the renowned Avignon Theatre Festival. In his work, Dausse challenges gravity by creating machines that throw performers off balance. During The Sound of C, we present an overview of various devices he has created and invite live musicians to engage in dialogue with the circus artists!

Brìghde Chaimbeul (UK)
The Scottish Brìghde Chaimbeul is the leading supplier of Celtic music and Scottish smallpipes. Recently, she even opened the Dior show in Scotland.

Alex Franz Zehetbauer (US)
The format of the classical concert of a vocalist at the piano becomes a humorous and performative show: from lullaby and folksong to a pop concert with a serious wink.

Lulu Obermayer (DE)
With '(a kind of) Requiem,' the German Lulu Obermayer channels Brahms' large-scale work into a performance where you can listen for five minutes or four hours.

Natasha Pirard
Surrounded by old analog tape machines and synthesizers, Soulwax protégé Natasha Pirard creates music to dream away to.

maya dhondt
Genres, sounds, and languages are mixed into what we can best describe as a postmodern cramp of glitch-pop and contemporary piano.

Inci Gül Civelekoglu
The embodiment of 'radical city to international top': the Genk-based Inci Gül Civelekoglu is one of the artists in residence at C-mine and presents the end result of her residency during The Sound of C.

Tibau Beirnaert
Tibau Beirnaert made a splash with 'Faggots' and will perform his pole dance act multiple times on Saturday 21.09 as an intervention.

fieldworks
The organization behind the art of Heine Avdal and Yukiko Shinozaki, creates a site-specific version of 'carry on' especially for The Sound of C. In collaboration with Belgian and international performers, actors, and sound designers, the performance takes you on an excursion to rooms, corridors, and obscure corners of the site that are not always accessible to the public.

MUSIC/PERFORMANCE MARATHON
During the festival, we invite various performance artists. There will be a new work by Genk native Inci Gül Civelekoglu. Inci is one of the artists in residence at C-mine this year and will present the result of her residency during the festival.

International artists will also perform, including the American Alex Franz Zehetbauer, who lives in Vienna. With 'An Evening With,' he transforms the format of the classical vocalist-at-the-piano concert into an experimental, performative approach that frees itself from the conventions of the recital. From lullabies to folk songs to pop concerts with a serious wink.

Or immerse yourself in '(a kind of) Requiem' by German artist Lulu Obermayer. This work is based on a large-scale piece for choir and orchestra composed by Johannes Brahms between 1865-1868. This art piece is time-sensitive and spans the entire afternoon; the audience can come and go as they please, choosing to stay for 5 minutes or four hours.

Additionally, expect Soulwax protégé Natasha Pirard, pole dance extraordinaire Tibau Beirnaert, the always unconventional Maya D'Hont, and the most beautiful sounds Scotland has to offer, thanks to Brìghde Chaimbeul.
